Hello! New contributor, Callie Leuck, here. When I first set out to write to professionals in the Maryland biotech industry, I wondered, “Why Maryland?” What, after all, is the big deal about Maryland? Why is there such a blooming biotech community in Maryland?
Here are some interesting things I discovered about Maryland’s support of its biotech community. You might already know these, but maybe you haven’t looked at them or thought about them in a while, and its always good to revisit why you are where you are.
- Maryland has an actual Strategic Plan to grow its bioscience cluster. Are you familiar with the BioMaryland 2020 Strategic Plan?
- The Maryland Biotechnology Center and BioHealth Innovation are here to specifically support the bioscience industry. Both are Strategic Partners of the 2012 Mid-Atlantic Bio Conference, which will be in Bethesda, MD September 27-28. Are you signed up?
- There’s a Biotechnology Investment Tax Credit available to qualified biotech businesses. In fact, the state recently received over 125 applications for credits for the 2013 fiscal year.
- Maryland is home to many federal agencies dedicated to science and health, such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the National Cancer Institute (NCI). Compared to other states, Maryland has the highest concentration of institutions that support and foster scientific discovery and human health.
These are just a few ways I’ve discovered that Maryland shows interest in supporting its biotech industry. But now I’m curious…Why are you in Maryland? What’s great about Maryland for your corner of the biotech industry?
